Harris Tweed Originally Harris Tweed was produced solely from the rugged wools of the hardy Blackface sheep that were acclimatised to the harsh, hostile conditions of the Hebridean Islands of Scotland. The unique characteristics of the tweed were recognised by the Countess of Dunmore (the then owner of the Isle of Harris) as ideally suitable for the hunting, shooting and fishing fraternity that frequented sporting estates. So the marketing of Harris Tweed was born. Harris Tweed production has moved with demands of modern times to incorporate finer and softer blends from around the World to meet changing fashion trends. Featherweight is the most popular weight we sell and is the quality available direct to the individual on our online shop. This quality was introduced to lighten the weight of the original "Lightweight" It is now the most commonly sold quality in Harris Tweed used extensively for the classic Harris Tweed sports jacket. It weights in Single width 216/240 gms/m and in Double width 450/470 gms/m. |
